Pablo Picasso was one of the greatest and most influential artist of 20th century. Pablo Ruiz y Picasso[25 Oct 1881 – 8 April 1973] was a Spanish painter, sculptor, print maker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet, and playwright who spent most of his adult life in France.
Several years ago, Yves Vequaud, a French art lover and documentary filmmaker happened to visit Mithilanchal. In the course of making documentary on Mithila folk paintings, he met famous artist Smt. Mahasundari Devi. He bought few of her paintings before returning back to France after the completion of his documentary movie. During those days Picasso was in France. Yves showed those paintings to Picasso. He was spellbound to see the originality and the combination of colours in the paintings.
Pablo Picasso took a paper and wrote ” People tell me that I am a great artist; but when I see your art, I find you a far better artist than me”. Yves gave this paper written by Picasso to Smt. Mahasundari Devi when he again visited her during his next trip to Madhubani. It was a priceless gift for Smt. Mahasundari Devi. She kept it safely for years. But unfortunately it got destroyed in a fire. She did not eat for quite some days in grief, says her daughter-in-law Smt. Vibha Das.
Paintings of Late Padmashree Mahasundari Devi are proudly displayed in the premises of Parliament of India, Luxorious Hotels, Museums and Art Galleries. These paintings have held the heads of every Indians high in USA, Uk, France, Germany and Japan.
